Meta, formerly known as Facebook, has announced plans to develop AI personas similar to ChatGPT, which will be integrated into various media formats, including Messenger, WhatsApp, Instagram, and other platforms. The company aims to improve chat features, unique Instagram filters, and ads, as well as video and “multi-modal” content.
The focus will be on creating tools that facilitate expression and content creation. The AI personas are a long-term goal, and the company is currently exploring the use of helpers for different media formats.
The social media company is consolidating its generative AI teams into one group to boost its efforts in the rapidly developing field. Mark Zuckerberg, the executive, did not give many specifics on this move and cautioned that a lot of groundwork needs to be done before the more sophisticated projects become a reality.
While the company previously introduced AI-based chatbots to its Messenger platform in 2016, its recent move to develop AI personas represents a substantial expansion. This shift is not unexpected as there is an increasing emphasis on generative AI within the industry.

Industry leaders like Google reportedly view OpenAI’s ChatGPT as a competitive threat, as it could potentially impact search and other significant business areas. During Meta’s latest earnings call, Mark Zuckerberg expressed his desire for the company to be at the forefront of generative AI development. However, this move may also be viewed as a defensive measure.
Unfortunately, the shift towards generative AI comes at a challenging time for Meta as the company is experiencing a decline in revenues. Moreover, its pivot towards the metaverse is resulting in significant costs, running into billions of dollars, for its Reality Labs unit.
In an attempt to cut costs and manage a tough economic environment, the company recently laid off more than 11,000 employees. Although platforms like Facebook and Instagram continue to attract users, Meta’s financial stability is not as strong as it used to be.
