The Qualcomm have announced the some of the changes, how it brands it’s snapdragon chips that includes the shift away from the 3 digit numbering system. It is been using to differentiate between its products for years. This information comes ahead of the company expected next generation flagship chip debut at the Snapdragon Technology on the 20th November.
Snapdragon will now exist as the standalone brand and separate from the Qualcomm brand. It is the direction that company has started moving in earlier this year Snapdragon 888 plus badge. For example notably lacked the word but today news solidifies that plan going forward. The biggest change now is, how the company handles actually naming its semiconductor products. Qualcomm has labeled its chips with 3 digit names, for example Snapdragon 480, Snapdragon 765 and the Snapdragon 888.

First number indicates that, how they broadly informed the customers how powerful the chip is, second number typically indicated annual generational releases while the changes in the 3rd number generally showed more minor updates.
Qualcomm says that, it will be shifting to the single digit series and the generation number and aligning with other products categories. Qualcomm already uses the generational naming scheme for the snapdragon personal computer processors. Like the Snapdragon 8cs Generation 2 or the Snapdragon 7c Generation 2 too so the change is not coming out of nowhere.
But the Qualcomm have not clearly saying what that new branding scheme will be although that announcement is expected to came at the Snapdragon Technology Summit next week. To the as yet unrevealed naming scheme Qualcomm announced the some other details about its Snapdragon branding plan. Company plans to emphasize use of gold to indicate top tier flagship products. They stop explicitly calling out 5G on chips nothing that 5G has become ubiquitous across its products line up and will be a given.
